  • Pain in the Kidneys – Reasons and Treatments

Pain in the Kidneys – Reasons and Treatments

The kidney is a very important organ in the human body. Acting as filter system of the blood it makes sure that unnecessary substances are excreted in urine. Moreover various hormones which also have a substantial influence on our body are produced and activated in the kidneys. Healthy and properly functioning kidneys are not noticed by us, which, however, changes within short, if the organs in the upper abdomen have developed a disease. A dull pain which mostly appears spasmodically is one of the first symptoms.

A lot of persons are frequently not aware of the pain originating from their kidneys. The kidneys are located on either side of the spine and level with the bottom of the ribcage. As the pain most of the time radiates downwards, it is often misinterpreted as backache. Contrary to backache, pain in the kidneys, however, mostly occurs spasmodically or intermittently and independent of any movements.

Causes of Pain in the Kidneys

There are numerous causes of pain in the kidneys which are not at all restricted to a usual inflammation. Pain in the kidneys is very frequently due to the following health problems:

    • Pyelitis: Most of the time it occurs as consequence of cystitis when the bacteria migrate from the bladder into the kidneys. Apart from having severe pain and a temperature, further typical symptoms of a pyelitis are shivers, bloody urine and frequent urge to urinate. Due to their short urinary tract particularly women suffer from pyelitis and cystitis.
    • Nephroliths: Nephroliths cause pain because they block the way to the bladder. They result from crystalline deposits such as e.g. salt. Men suffer from this illness more often than women.
    • Tumours of the kidney: Severe pain in the kidneys may of course be due to a tumour. It is important to know that a tumour is recognized only in the advanced stage as it does not cause any pain in the early stage.
    • Cystic kidneys: This painful illness of the kidneys is genetic in most cases and may lead to kidney failure in the worst case.
    • Glomerulonephritis: An inflammation of the renal corpuscles – which are also called “glomeruli“ – may be due to auto-immune diseases or various medicaments. Also in this case pain in the kidneys – partly severe! – occurs.
    • Chronic kidney failure: This type of kidney failure is primarily caused by diabetes or high blood pressure, but may also be due to long-lasting pyelitis and medicaments. Pain, foaming or bloody urine and water retention in the legs are typical symptoms of a chronic kidney failure. Quite often this illness, however, goes unnoticed.
    • Acute kidney failure: An acute kidney failure may be caused by nephroliths, great blood loss, medicaments or vascular occlusion. The kidneys stop working within very short time, which may have drastic consequences for the body. It does not only react with pain in the kidneys, but also with other symptoms which unfortunately are not always clear. A stopped urine production, however, is unambiguously indicative for an acute kidney failure. In this case the life of the respective person is in danger.
    • Menstrual pains: Some women who suffer from severe menstrual pains also complain of pain in the kidneys. This pain, however, is harmless and disappears at the end of the menstruation.

In case of pain in the kidneys it is a must to consult a doctor.

Apart from kidney problems which occur as menstrual pain and can be easily and clearly classified, pain in the kidneys should always be used as an opportunity to see a doctor. Inflammations, nephroliths as well as chronic and particularly acute failure of the kidneys are serious illnesses which may have severe consequences.

Kidney problems and kidney diseases which mostly cause severe pain can be avoided by following the advice given herein below:

    • Always keep the kidneys warm.
    • Drink a lot of water or unsweetened tea.
    • Refrain from too much salt in your food.

If you take the signals of your body seriously and consult a doctor in time, kidney diseases can be treated mostly without any problems. It is of great importance to recognize that the pain is radiating from the kidneys instead of interpreting it as usual backache.

  • Ruptured Blood Vessels – dangerous or harmless

Ruptured Blood Vessels – dangerous or harmless

Almost every person has already had a reddened eye which is a sign for a ruptured small blood vessel – usually something harmless that does not require ophthalmologic treatment. But if the eye remains red for a longer period of time, the redness may be due to another cause and needs to be examined by a doctor. The symptoms of a blood vessel ruptured in the eye normally automatically disappear after a few days or max. two weeks without leaving consequential damages.

    Causes of Ruptured Blood Vessels

Hyposphagma is the term which the doctor uses for a ruptured blood vessel. At least once in a person’s lifetime a blood vessel ruptures which is indicated by a noticeable redness. The intensity of this redness depends on the numbers of ruptured small blood vessels. Usually such blood vessels are harmless, but if they appear in the eye, an optical problem arises. In the event of impaired vision the concerned eye must, however, be examined by a doctor, because its redness may be due to a cause other than a ruptured vessel.

A small blood vessel often ruptures in the eye as consequence of vigorous sneezing or severe coughing. In this case the blood vessels expand and burst as soon as pressure has been built up. Everybody suffering from hay fever or another allergy often faces the problem of a ruptured blood vessel in the eye. Further possible causes of ruptured small blood vessels in the eye are conjunctivitis, a bad cold or a dry eye. A blood vessel in the eye may also rupture due to a foreign body in the eye, excessive sun exposure, severe air pollution or improperly inserted contact lens; they all result in an unattractive, red eye.

    When to See a Doctor

As already mentioned, ruptured (small) blood vessels are usually harmless. Nevertheless there are obvious symptoms which are indicative of a severe illness. Such symptoms are for example:

    • Sudden sensitivity to light
    • Impaired vision
    • Intense itching in or at the eye
    • Smarting or watering eye
    • Nausea and vomiting

If one of these symptoms occurs, you should not hesitate to consult an ophthalmologist as the burst blood vessel may be due to a severe cause.

How to treat Ruptured Blood Vessels

If the redness of the eye – due to a ruptured blood vessel in the eye – has not disappeared after two weeks, the eye should be examined by an ophthalmologist who will look for the cause and – if necessary – propose a therapy. The eye quite often only requires a rest so that it may be reasonable to cover it with an eye-patch for some time. If you usually spend several hours at the computer, you should stop doing so for a while and also prevent overstraining the eye by exposing it to other stimuli (e.g. TV). If the ruptured blood vessel is, however, due to an infection or an allergy, special ointments, medicaments or eye drops may be very helpful. In case that a foreign body in the eye has caused the ruptured blood vessel, the doctor will remove it and rinse the eye. A ruptured blood vessel in the eye requires surgery only in exceptional cases; but the consulted doctor of course has to take the final decision.

If a small blood vessel ruptures in the eye, it is harmless in most cases, but nevertheless embarrassing for the concerned persons. The symptoms have to be accepted for a short while, but usually disappear automatically. If you prefer being on the safe side, you can consult a doctor who will look for the cause of the reddened eye.

  • Contact Bleeding – unpleasant but mostly harmless

Contact Bleeding – unpleasant but mostly harmless

Numerous women suffer from bleedings apart from the menstruation. Such contact bleeding causes fear and worries. If a contact bleeding occurs – for example – during sex, it is harmless in most cases, but nevertheless it is disturbing. In the event that you more frequently suffer from contact bleedings, it is highly recommendable to see a doctor to get to know the specific causes. A medical intervention to stop the contact bleedings for a long time is necessary only in exceptional cases.

Possible Causes of a Contact Bleeding

A contact bleeding is mostly caused by excessive strain due to particular positions during sex or the partner’s penis size. In case of a contact bleeding more careful sex may be quite advantageous and advisable. A contact bleeding may also be caused by a gynecological examination due to a sensitively reacting cervix. The tissue in the uterus and vagina tends to bleed, but this contact bleeding will stop within very short, if the tissue is given a rest and treated with care.

If the blood of a contact bleeding is dark or if the contact bleeding is either profuse, very painful or takes longer, a gynecologist is to be consulted. The tissue at the cervix may shift into the mouth of the uterus. In case of a so-called ectopia a contact bleeding may be a sign of cervical cancer. To gain certainty, a thorough gynecological examination is indispensable.

    Appropriate Treatment of Contact Bleedings

If the gynecologist has diagnosed a patient with ectopia, sclerosing will be the adequate treatment in most cases which is in general very well tolerated. The tissue will be burnt by use of laser while the patient is under general anesthetic during this surgery. In most cases sclerosing proves to be successful as no contact bleedings occur again for a longer period of time.

After sclerotherapy was applied to avoid further contact bleeding, the concerned woman must neither have sex nor do sport during the following six weeks.

Sclerosing by use of laser does not guarantee that a contact bleeding will occur never again. The same problem rather frequently shows up after a few years. Although neither contact bleedings nor a sclerotherapy impact a woman’s fertility, a detailed consultation prior to the medical intervention is highly recommended.

Difference between Contact Bleeding and Intermenstrual Bleeding

The cause of the contact bleeding and the intermenstrual bleeding may be harmless, but nevertheless both kinds of bleeding require medical examination. An intermenstrual bleeding may be due to a salpingitis or an inflammation of the vagina.

The color and consistency of the blood are different in case of a contact- respectively intermenstrual bleeding. While the blood of a contact bleeding is bright-red, clear and liquid, it is viscid, dark-red and often accompanied with yellow mucus in case of an intermenstrual bleeding. Contact bleedings stop by themselves in most cases, whereas intermenstrual bleedings may be very refractory.

Particularly women who have recently given birth to a child often suffer from intermenstrual bleedings. They are frequently due to infections such as chlamydia, trichomonads and mycoplasmosis. Upon surgery at the uterus or childbirth infectious agents can spread more easily and more quickly and thus cause intermenstrual bleedings.

Do not miss to see a doctor, if contact bleedings and particularly intermenstrual bleedings occur more frequently!
